I. PENGERTIAN

Explanation text is a text to provide a clear explanation. Usually, explanation texts contain explanations about social, natural, or cultural phenomena. The purpose of writing this text is to inform the reader about how something works or why something happens.

1. General statement (General Statement)

Contains a strong concluding paragraph or sentence that ties together the general statement and previous explanation.

I. PENGERTIAN

Procedure text is a text aiming to inform the readers about the steps to do something

II. CIRI CIRI TEXT

Untuk mengenali procedure text kita perlu mengetahui ciri-cirinya, seperti halnya jika kita bertemu seseorang pertama kali. Berikut beberapa ciri kebahasaan dari procedure text:

1. This text discusses the fact of making or using something, so we need to use the simple present tense.

2. Since we need to explain some steps, we have to use an imperative sentence. Examples of sentences in procedure text are add 5 onions, get some yeast and pan. The most important thing, friends, is that command sentences must begin with a verb. Examples are mix, stir, boil, add, turn on, get, and so on.

3. In procedure text, when we want to explain the steps for making/usage, there are times when we need to connect one sentence with another sentence. Therefore, we need connecting words. For example: first, second, after that, then, finally, last, and so on.

4. To provide information about the time or duration of production in procedure text, we need to use adverbs. Examples are in 5 minutes, for an hour, and so on. In addition, we can also use adverbs of manner. For example: slowly, quickly, rapidly, powerfully, etc

Dalam membuat procedural text, penting untuk mengetahui apa saja generic structure-nya. Generic structure suatu procedural text terdiri dari aim/goal, ingredients/materials, serta steps/methods.

Aim/Goal

So, the first part of writing a procedure text is aim/goal which means goal. Usually, this purpose lies in the title which shows the purpose of the text.

Example: How to Make Dalgona Coffee

Ingredients/Materials..

In the second part, Smart Friends are required to write ingredients/materials. Writing ingredients/materials is useful for explaining what ingredients or tools are used to make something in the procedure text.

Example: The ingredients to make Dalgona coffee are coffee and sugar. We also need a spoon and warm water.

Steps/Methods

I. PENGERTIAN TENSE

Tenses are changes in the form of verbs based on the description of time and the nature of activities or events. Tenses are divided into 4 types, namely present, past, future, and past future. These four groups are further divided into 16 tenses. You can also learn tips for mastering the 16 tenses

II. TYPE OF TENSE

1. Simple Present Tense

The simple present tense is the tense form most commonly used in everyday life. Usually, the simple present tense is used to express facts, tell an event, or a habit that is happening in the present.

The formula used to form the simple present tense:

Subject + Verb 1 (Present Form)

Examples of Positive Sentences: "They speak Korean very well."

Examples of Negative Sentences (Negative): "They don't speak Korean."

Examples of Question Sentences (Question): "Do they speak Korean?"

2. Present Continuous Tense

Unlike the simple present tense, the present continuous tense is used to tell about events that were taking place while you were speaking. Apart from that, this tense can also be used to talk about future plans. For this tense, there is a change in the form of the verb with the addition of -ing at the end. One of the adverbs of time that is often used in this tense is now.

Formula: Subject + am/is/are + Verb -ing (Continuous Form)

Example sentences are as follows:

Example Sentences (Positive): "She is working on her homework now."

Sentence Example (Negative): "She is not working on her homework now."

Sentence Example (Question): "Is she working on her homework now?"

Sentence Example (To tell future plans): "Mark is moving to a new school next month.

3. Present Perfect Tense

Generally, the present perfect tense is a tense to tell an action or action that is ongoing or has just finished. Oh yes! Remember that the present perfect tense tends to put emphasis on the impact of an action that has already been completed. Of course, this impact must still be felt today.

Formula: Subject + has/have + Verb 3 (Past Participle Form)

Here is an example sentence:

Sentence Example (Negative): "I have not been thinking about it."

5. Simple Past Tense

You're right, this simple past tense is the opposite of the simple present tense. In this case, the simple past tense is used to tell an event, habit, state a fact, or a situation that happened in the past. This tense uses the second or past form of the verb. Adverbs of time commonly used in this tense are yesterday, two days ago, and many more.

Formula: Subject + Verb II (Past Form)

Sentence Example (Positive): "They called their friends yesterday."

Sentence Example (Negative): "They did not call their friends yesterday."

Sentence Example (Question): "Did they call their friends yesterday?"

Through these tenses, you can make stories from the past to practice understanding changes in verb forms. Oh yes, in order to make it easier to learn past tenses, it is also highly recommended for you to master verb forms in English. In the past tense, the most frequently used forms are regular verbs and irregular verbs.

I. PENGERTIAN

Short Functional Text in English is defined as a short text that provides information about something that concerns your daily life. Definitions and examples of Short Functional text itself can be adapted to certain functions or activities. Examples of functional text include advertisements, movie posters, invitations, announcements, product reviews, warnings, etc.

II. TYPE OF FUNCTIONAL TEXT

1. Caution/ Warning (Instruction/ Warning)

– DON'T TURN RIGHT (forbidden to turn right)

– PLEASE TURN OFF YOUR MOBILE PHONE (Please turn off your cell phone)

2. Greeting Cards or Greeting Cards

III. Types of Short Functional Text

 1. Announcement

An announcement is a statement addressed to public to provide information that something has happened or is going to happen. This type of SFT is commonly found in the public place or media, respectively, such as at school (on an announcement board), a newspaper, magazine, a window of a shop, a city park, etc.

2. Advertisement

Typical information used to persuade audience (readers or listeners) to do something or to take some action. This type of SFT usually contains the name of a product or service and the explanation of how the product or service benefits the audience.

3. Memo

Memo, commonly sent to colleagues and co-workers. They differ from letters as they are more informal and do not require a salutation or a closure statement as in formal letter. This type of text is used to convey some basic information, particularly to persuade action, to issue a directive, or to provide a report.

4. Invitation Letters

An invitation is a type of letter which is written to invite a guest to a particular event or celebration. Invitation is categorized into a formal and informal. For example, an invitation letter inviting peers or clients to an event hosted by the company or inviting persons for an important meeting is a formal letter. Those letters are categorized as business invitation letters and are written in a formal tone. Invitation letters sent to friends and family members can be less formal. This type of letter is sent for a social function such as such as birthday, marriage, etc.

5. Label

Label is a term which refers to printed information affixed on a container of product. Label function to communicate product-specific information to the consumers and encourage a purchase. I.Definition

Text is a text that retells events or events in the past. The story can be in the form of action or activity before someone writes the text.

Recount text is a type of text in learning English which has the function of retelling events or experiences that occurred in the past. This text aims to provide information and/or entertain readers who read this writing.

III.Text structure

1. Orientation, 

the first structure that contains information about the character, the scene, when the event took place and so on. The information provided by the author is expected to provide the knowledge or information needed by the reader in order to understand the storyline.

2. Events

the second structure is the content of the text or in the form of stories about events or experiences that the author wants to convey to the reader.

3. Reorientation, 

the third structure contains conclusions as well as summaries or repetition of information contained in the orientation structure.

IV. Types of Recount

1. Personal accounts

is a recount text that has a function to tell about the author's personal experience. Personal recount is the most common type used to write recount text

2. Factual recount

is a recount text that has a function to present reports about events that occurred based on facts (actually happened). Examples include reports about science experiments or reports from the police.

3. imaginative

is a recount text that has a function to tell imaginative events. For example, recount text tells about the author's experience in imagining a scene that he got from his dream.

4. Historical recount

is a recount text that contains history. An example is a recount text about the proclamation of Indonesian independence.

5. Procedural recount

Procedural recounts aren’t very common in English lessons - they’re more for scientists. In fact, they’re most often used to describe an experiment so that it can be replicated by others. Because of this, the language needs to be exact. Procedural recounts might not even involve the use of full sentences.

V. Expresion / Langue Features

Language Features of Recount Text

– Using the simple past tense, past continuous tense, past perfect tense, and past perfect continuous tense.

– Using temporal sequence, e.g. On Saturday. On Monday, On Sunday

– Focus on specific participant, e.g. I (the writer)

– Using the conjunctions, such as: then, before, after, etc.

– Using action verb, e.g. went, stayed

My Grandpas Hometown

Two weeks ago, I and my family were in my grandpa’s hometown. it is our annual agenda every holiday in the end of Semester. Unfortunately, it was rainy season there.

it rained almost every day there. We had no enough time to visit some tourism places there because of the rain. We had no enough sunlight even to dry up our laundries. As a result, we just stayed at home almost all day long. Seeing the condition, we decided to make an interesting activity indoor to spend the holiday together. The activity we chose that day was making funny videos directed by me. Finishing the videos, we edited them and made them uploaded in youtube.

By doing this, we could kill our boredom of staying at home because of the rain and made a creative activity instead.

VII. Writing

My holiday

        One month ago, my family and I were in Yogyakarta. it is our annual agenda every semester end holiday. Unfortunately, it's rainy season there.it rains almost every day there. We didn't have enough time to visit some tourist spots like there because of the rain. We don't have enough sunlight even to dry our laundry. As a result, we just stayed at the hotel where we stayed most of the day. Seeing these conditions, we decided to make interesting activities in the hotel room to spend the holidays together. The activity we chose that day was to play the game "do mi ka do", we played this game with the loser getting a penalty for making funny jokes.By doing this, we don't feel that we've been at the hotel all day and kill our boredom staying at the hotel because of the rain and make entertaining activities for us
